AAC Adventures – Summer 2020
Developing literacy and social skills for users of Alternative and Augmentative Communication
AAC Adventures is a small group therapy program focused on developing communication, literacy, and social skills for children who use Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems. This program will focus on a core word and theme each week. This theme will then be explored in a storybook, during literacy activities (such as shared reading, predictable chart writing, and phonological awareness activities), with customized sensory experiences, and in group activities. By focusing group activities on book reading, children will develop emerging literacy skills as well as learn skills to communicate with other AAC users. This group is co-led by two Speech-Language Pathologists who have training and clinical experience working with a variety of AAC methods, including picture communication, LAMP WFL, Unity, WordPower, PODD, and Snap+Core.
- Participate in shared reading
- Use target core vocabulary words during literacy and group activities
- Develop social skills, including turn-taking and cooperation
- Improve conversational skills, including greeting, commenting, and saying goodbye
Date: Thursdays, June 18th – August 6th
Cost: $100 per session
To register, submit an electronic form.
Children are expected to attend every session (barring illness), as the sessions build on each other and group dynamics are an important component. These services are billed as Occupational and/or Speech Therapy services and many parents receive partial reimbursement from their insurance companies.
If your child is not attending therapy sessions at Emerge, we will be in touch with you to set up a brief free screening to determine if this program is a good match for your child
