Creative Writers – Summer 2017
DEVELOPING ORGANIZED AND EFFECTIVE WRITING SKILLS IN CHILDREN
FOR CHILDREN 7 THRU 10 YEARS OLD
Creative Writers is a small group designed to elicit imaginative, organized, and effective writing, while working to improve formation, placement, size, and other structural components of handwriting. In Creative Writers, group members will have the opportunity to take on a variety of writing roles, including reporters, detectives, announcers, storytellers, or others to incorporate shared experiences, factual information and visual imagery into their writing. Narrative and expository writing will be targeted, with special attention paid to rules for writing and ways to “draw the reader in.” This groups is appropriate for students who are able to independently compose (at minimum) several written sentences about a topic. This creative group is run by two occupational therapists.
- Improving legibility and fluid formation of sentences (e.g. line placement, sizing, spacing of letters and words).
- Improving organization and structure of writing (e.g. coherent structure, parts of speech, conveys ideas/information effectively).
- Improve timeliness of writing
- Learn self-editing skills to independently check and correct mistakes in writing
WHEN: Monday and Wednesdays, July 24th-August 16th TIME: 3:30-5:00PM
In order to keep the cost low, this program is offered as a flat rate with no make-ups or refunds. We understand that your child may miss one or more weeks due to vacation and the cost has been established with that in mind. You may be able to seek reimbursement from insurance for OT services from your insurance provider.
