Storytellers – Winter/Spring 2020
Building handwriting proficiency through motivating,
media-based activities for children 7 to 10 years old
This is a group targeting fine motor skills, handwriting and organization of composition for older kids (who are beyond the stage of letter formation). Skills targeted will include ideation, sequencing, and written composition and are flexible to change depending on the needs of the group members. Activities for the group will be dependent on the group’s interests and motivation. Examples of possible activities include (but are not limited to) journaling, autobiographies, preferred topic reports, producing a news show, producing a screenplay and filming a movie, developing a script to put on a play, or a bound book to donate to the Emerge library. This group will be co-led by one occupational therapist and one speech-language therapist. The group will be limited to 6 children.
Goals include:
- Increase fine motor strength and coordination required for legibility
- Improve handwriting endurance
- Improve ideation, sequencing and organization required for writing
- Develop an understanding of organization supports for writing
- Improve the capacity for independent written composition
When: Wednesdays, January 15th – June 3rd (No group the week of April 13th)
Time: 5:00 – 6:00 pm
Cost: $100 per session
Registration Information
To register, submit an electronic form.
Children are expected to attend every session (barring illness), as the sessions build on each other and group dynamics are an important component. These services are billed as Occupational and/or Speech Therapy services and many parents receive partial reimbursement from their insurance companies.
If your child is not attending therapy sessions at Emerge, we will be in touch with you to set up a brief free screening to determine if this program is a good match for your child.
